hi there I trying to setup nagiosql
but I can not seem to get passed this error

MySQL server connection (privileged user) Error: Cannot set CHARSET NAMES. MySQL Error: Unknown system variable 'NAMES'

would anyone know what might be causing my problem?

Have a look at our requirement page:

www.nagiosql.org/about-nagiosql.html

NagiosQL needs a MySQL Version above 4.1. I think your MySQL is older than 4.1.

thank for that I see it did have an old version of mysql.. I updated it and it finished the install now. but when it tries to open the index.php the browser download it and it is a 0byte file.

same for admin.php but if a drag another *php file to the directory it will open and display

Then you have not configured your httpd with mod_php in the right way. Your Webserver don't know how to handle phpfiles and offers them as downloadable media.
